В мережі набуває популярності флешмоб “kyiv not kiev”

Kyiv – правильна транслітерація з української мови назви столиці України відповідно до UNCSGN (United Nations Conferences on the Standardization of Geographical Names) і UNGEGN (United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names).

“Панове, давайте разом придумаємо і запустимо акцію/кампанію (або кілька), в результаті якої весь світ, а головне – УКРАЇНЦІ англійською писатимуть Kyiv, а не Kiev. І в аеропортах, у тому числі українських, писатимуть Kyiv. Kyiv International Airport. І Фейсбук відзначатиме іноземців у Києві, а не Киеве.

Будь ласка, долучайтеся всі, і репостьте, або пишіть свої пости. Збирайте думки, запускайте акції. Важливо, з якою мовою асоціює нашу столицю весь англомовний світ. Надважлива річ за умов інформаційної війни.

Dear friends, I keep saying to all my international friends: it is Kyiv, not Kiev, and Kharkiv, not Kharkov. Kyiv is the right version as decided by UNCSGN (United Nations Conferences on the Standardization of Geographical Names) and UNGEGN (United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names).

“Kiev” is in Russian. “Kyiv” is in Ukrainian, which makes it the right way to write, since Ukraine is an independent country. Same goes with the name of Ukraine: Ukraine, not “the Ukraine”. And, in Russian, “v Ukraine/в Украине” (in Ukraine), not “na Ukraine/на Украине” (on [the territory of] Ukraine). ”

“The “Kiev” spelling offends Ukrainians because it implies that it’s a Soviet Union city. Kyiv is the proper name for the capital of Ukraine.
Same thing goes for the country name: “the Ukraine” implies that it’s “the republic of Ukraine” as part of Soviet Union, while Ukraine is the name of present-day independent state.”
